Mistakes To Avoid When Taking Your Impression

Even the professionals get impression taking wrong now and then but by reading through this short list of you can avoid the five main mistakes others have made when taking dental impressions.

1) NOT COOLING THE PUTTY IN THE FRIDGE PRIOR TO MIXING

Cooling the impression putty in the fridge extends the reaction time when they are mixed together giving you more time to correctly mix the putty's into a uniform colour. If the putty is already warm and then mixed together with your warm hands it will harden much faster and you will not achieve a nice deep impression of your teeth and gums.

Make sure to leave the putty in the fridge for a minimum of 15 minutes before mixing!

2) MIXING PUTTY INCORRECTLY

Whilst we advise on the importance to mix the two putty's together quickly it is equally important to correctly mix them into a uniform colour. There should be no streaky marbling. If the putty is cooled in the fridge prior to mixing then there is plenty of time to achieve the correct mix of the putty and place it into the tray.

If the putty is not correctly mixed then areas of the impression may not set properly and give an inaccurate record of your teeth or gums.

3) TAKING TOO LONG TO MIX THE PUTTY

Conversely to mistake number 2 is when people take too long to mix the putty's together, which results

in the putty hardening before the impression can be taken and a deep enough impression won't be

achieved. This photo is an example of this particular mistake. As you can see the teeth have not gone

far enough into the material.

4) NOT TAKING A DEEP ENOUGH IMPRESSION

This mistake applies mostly to our Sports Mouthguard products. To make a mouthguards that fits and protects as best as possible we need an impression that includes a maximum amount of your gums as possible. This is because a mouthguard works best when we can design it to cover your teeth and your gums up to where it is comfortable enough to wear.

Therefore when taking your impression it is very important to push the tray firmly up into your mouth as high as possible so that the impression material goes right up into the gums. The front lip must be fully over the front portion of the tray.

Your impression should look like the example below:

5) NOT KEEPING THE TRAY STEADY WHILE THE PUTTY SETS

Once the impression tray has been pushed firmly up into the teeth and gums it's important that the tray is held steady while the putty sets. If the tray is moved around too much then it will create inaccuracies in the impression.

If you have read through these examples and watched our impression taking video several times then you should have no trouble taking your dental impression. If you are unsure if your impression is correct before returning it to us then you can email us a photo of it to info@spartanguards.com.au

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT US

SABRINA

3mm Soft/Hard Nightguard

After a visit to the dentist and suffering with increasing tooth sensitivity  my dentist advised me that my teeth have suffered considerable wear due to night time grinding. I was quoted a lot of money to be provided a night guard  so i'm so thankful a friend told me about Spartan Guards. Saved myself a considerable amount of money over the dental surgeries prices!

Kerry

Silensor-sl Anti Snore Device

I was apprehenive initially about using the anti-snore device as I was worried it would uncomfortable to wear while sleeping. I couldn't be happier with it though once I started using it! It's really comfortable to use and it has significantly reduced the noise of my snoring, much to my fiancee's delight!

Lyndsay

Soft/hard Nightguard

I recently found out I needed a guard to help stop grinding my teeth. I reached out to  Spartan Guards - the process to get one privately exceeded my expectations.
I was consulted on the strength of the guard, walked through how to do the mold, and then created the guard, talking me through the process so I could appreciate what was going into the work. It arrived in the post so quickly, way faster than expected, and fit perfectly! It also came with a case to ensure it stays clean.

Going directly to a professional guard maker meant it significantly lowered the cost, because the dentist markup was gone. f your considering getting a dental protection device having discussed it with your dentist, I highly recommend you reach out to Spartan Guards.

Wilson Zhang

2mm Soft/Hard Night Guard

Excellent product and service - Darren went out of his way to make sure that I did the dental impression correctly. The custom made nightguard is a very comfortable fit - one hardly notices that one's wearing a dental guard. Very pleased with the purchase.
